Came together once more
On a field next to Orgreave
Old Lads and Lasses
Teaching younger Lads and Lasses
Telling story’s of the great heroic
struggle
Fighting the wicked shop keepers
daughter
The ale flowed well, Scargill Stout.
Almost knocked me out.
My mate on stage reading poems of
struggle.
Words that made the pulses race.
So Put fire in yer belly
Rise up and unite
Let’s honour their fight
By sending Thatcher’s apprentices
The Bullingdon boys of Greed
Back to the cesspit pits
From whence they came

ReplyDeleteCitizen 32: Call for submissions - Tony Benn, the Miners' Strike and the Spirit of Tolpuddle!
ReplyDeleteThe radical poetry and arts magazine, Citizen 32 is producing a new Tolpuddle special edition which will be on sale at the 2014 festival. Profits will go to the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign.
There will be three themes - tributes to Tony Benn, the 30th anniversary of the miner’s strike and the "Spirit of Tolpuddle".
We want to hear from anyone who wants to share their memories of socialist Labour MP and Tolpuddle Festival stalwart Tony Benn. Contributions can be in the form of poetry, articles or short tributes. Tributes to the late Bob Crow are also welcome.
We also want work marking the anniversary of the 1984-85 miners’ strike, in poetry, prose, artwork or photographs.
As usual, we want contributions summing up the “Spirit of Tolpuddle” – the brave stand of the six martyrs and the developments and events inspired by them eg. the fight against cuts and privatisation, the strikes in the public sector, the battle for human rights, and the struggle against racism.
We can’t offer payment for published work, but any profits from the magazine will go to the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign.
Email your work to editor@citizen32.com – the earlier the better, but not later than June 29.
And if you're coming to the festival you can sign up for the poetry open-mic session on the Saturday starting at 12 noon, hosted by Citizen 32 and Bob Johnson. Email us to book a slot in advance or turn up on the day.
